Beyond the Budget Episode 1: The Weight of Ownership Release date: Monday, September 7, 2026
Full show notes:
There's a difference between responsibility and ownership. Responsibility says, I'll do my part. Ownership says, everything depends on me. One of those is sustainable. The other will eventually break you, even while you still look like you have it all together.
In this episode, Greg opens up about a season early in his marriage when he started a business, ignored the counsel of people who loved him, and quietly began making decisions in isolation, moving money between accounts, staying silent about the hole he was digging, and telling himself he was just buying time. He shares what it actually felt like the day Karen discovered their account was overdrawn, and why what scared him most wasn't the number, it was being seen.
This is a chapter about the weight of believing you have to carry it all yourself, and the slow, humbling process of learning to set it down. And Greg is honest about something most teachers don't admit: learning a lesson once doesn't mean it stays learned.
In this episode:
Why almost nobody carrying that kind of weight ever looks like they're carrying it
The difference between responsibility and ownership, and why one is sustainable and one isn't
What happened when Greg's business decisions were made in isolation, and what it cost him
Why being seen scared him more than the overdrawn account itself
The moment everything changed, and why it was also the beginning of freedom
The honest twist: what happened when the old patterns quietly crept back in
This week's step
Notice the moment it happens. The moment you catch yourself thinking, I've got this, the way that means everything depends on you. Don't try to fix it yet. Just notice it.
